I went to Preah Vihear in late January 2010. It is open for tourists but there was some shooting and some rocket launchers being fired between the two countries the day before and two days after I went there. So not many foreign tourists.. Lots of Khmers though. By the way.. The shooting itself doesn't normally happen that close to the temple area. It's usually a couple of hundred meters down in the mined valley where the disputed border area is.

The road up there from Siem Reap via Anlong Veng is very good. Only the last 30 minutes is a bit bumpy as it's not paved yet.. But they were working on it when I drove through there. Should be finished soon, if it isn't already by the time I write this.

The comment above about the escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia in the Preah Vihear regions are definitely worth considering before you go. See this CNN article <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/07/15/cambodia.temple.ap/index.html. " rel="nofollow"><a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/07/15/c...</a rel="nofollow">" target="_blank">http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/07/15/c...</a></a> I'm not saying you it's not still possible to visit...just something you should know before attempting a trip.

Wonderful reading; I really enjoyed this piece!

A heads up for anyone planning to go to Preah Vihear temple, it is closed as of June 23, due to escalating tension between Thailand and Cambodia. Both countries have disputed the boundaries of Preah Vihear for years but this time, the conflict is part of heightening political tension in Bangkok. Just check before you go...

Glad you found the article useful, Bray! Do take care in August, as it's the end of the monsoon season and the roads to Preah Vihear will be miserable.

Thanks for this great article. I'm planning on going to Preah Vihear in August. Until now, I'd found very little information on getting here but your piece has given me a great starting point.

Wow, thanks for writing, that was really cool. That made me want to explore the less visited parts of Cambodia.
