I hate to be persnickety, but the Bahamas are not islands of the Caribbean-- they have their own unique geography, history and identity! Let's promote their uniqueness instead of grouping them with other tropical island themed destinations!

Tammy beat me to it, Boone. There's more to geography that strictly geography, if you see what I mean. And yes, it does seem trivial - why not point out the errors that actually mislead or misinform readers about the subject matter of the article, thus doing everyone a service, rather than simply being a pedant? NATO's a terrible example to prove your point, by the way - most of the United States (and a good chunk of Canada) is nowhere near the North Atlantic!

--I don't see my first comment showing up, so I hope this isn't a duplicate. I apologize if it is. -- The term "Caribbean" has a number of generally accepted uses, one of which is in reference to the islands in and *around* the Caribbean Sea (and Carribean Plate) that share common geographical, historical, cultural and environmental characteristics. This is the use the Bahamian government uses when it identifies the country as part of the Caribbean, and this is the use intended in the article. Splitting geographic hairs, the Bahamas are not part of the Caribbean, since they are on the North American Plate, but the geographic use of the term Caribbean is not its only acceptable use and not an error in this case.

While it is true that the Bahamas are outside of the Caribbean Plate, the term "Caribbean" has a number of generally accepted uses, one of which is referring to the islands *near* the Caribbean Sea that have common geographical, environmental, historical and cultural roots. In this case, the term Caribbean refers to those common roots and to the culture and climate visitors expect when they hear the word "Caribbean." Since even the Bahamian government considers themselves part of the Caribbean, it is an appropriate generally accepted usage of the term Caribbean. You are right that if you are referring solely to geography of the Caribbean Plate, the Bahamas are not located there, however in this case it is not an error in referring to the Bahamas as part of the Caribbean, but rather an accepted usage outside of the geographical usage of the term Caribbean.

Eva, CARICOM is an economic organization and does not define geography. Do you consider Bermuda in the Caribbean just because they have a membership in CARICOM? Or what about Suriname or Guyana? Georgia might become a member of NATO but are they really any where close to the North Atlantic? The Caribbean is the body of water south of the Greater Antilles, East of Central America and Mexico, North of South America and West of the Lesser Antilles. It may seem trivial but I have noticed many errors in the some of the articles on this website lately and wanted to make the point.

Boone - if the Bahamas are not in the Caribbean, I would be curious to know why they are members of CARICOM?

Abaco is not in the Caribbean. The Caribbean does not begin for nearly 500 miles south when you reach the Southern shore of W. Cuba. In no way can Abaco be considered the Caribbean. But you would never know where Abaco is or how to get there by reading the article. The editors need to step up and start doing some fact checking.

Great to see this excellent guide published! Abaco sounds magical - who needs big resorts? Not me.
