Although I did manage to get off the beaten trail of Tokyo to Kyoto a Little bit I didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy some of the more remote destinations that you have highlighted. These photos are absolutely jaw dropping to me, I always forget that Japan has such tropical places ! I must go !

Hey J, Sorry I didn't check up on my comments here; you'll notice I said the more frequented trails were covered with wooden steps, but yes, I also went up some of the more off-the-main-path trails. However, I stand by that statement, because those trails do not lead to the Jyoumon Sugi, one of the main attractions on Yakushima.

thanks J – it's good to know there are some more off-beat alternatives on Yakushima. I lived in Japan over two years and apart from one trip to Okinawa, never made it south of Hiroshima. Yakushima is on the list.

This is a nice article but some of the information about Yakushima is incorrect: "…mountain trails reinforced with wooden steps 90% of the way" ??? I think the writer has only walked one of the trails! There are over 15 major trails, most of which are deep within the forest with no man-made steps/handrails, etc. at all!

This is not a comment, it's rather a inquiry. I love to play racquetball and I visit Japan often. Is there any where near Osaka where I can meet people who play racquetball and are willing to play a game or two while I'm visiting? I'm a 64 years old woman who plays racquetball everyday.
