Travel journalist and videographer Allison, a.k.a. smalldogonthego, has a history with the Dominican Republic going back to 2001, when she lived on the island while working on a baseball documentary.
She hasn’t been able to let go since:
I’m currently involved with a children’s non-profit…and have made a number of trips into the countryside and all over the island.
My areas of expertise would probably be Dominican baseball, Dominican food, the history of the country, getting off the beaten path, good shopping, and larimar (my favorite stone, found only in the Dominican Republic!).

Here’s a little more about this week’s featured expert:
About me: My travel essentials: yoga pants, hiking boots, running shoes, my video camera and my dog.
Languages spoken, other than English: Spanish, Italian.
I’m fired up on: adventure travel, filmmaking, yoga, running, volunteer tourism, my dog, the American Southwest, writing, working for The Travel Channel and doing what I love most!
Why I travel: because the world becomes my classroom

Hi Allison!
I’ve been to Puerta Plata once before on a family vacay and I’m going back to Puerta Plata in February. Unfortunately I am on an all-inclusive trip but I really want to explore the island and get off the beaten path! Do you have any reccomendations of where to explore? Where to eat? Where to party ? I’d love your input! Do you know anything about the Samana Peninsula ? I’ve read that it is Domican’s “last frontier”. . .
Hope to hear back from you

Hello Allison,
My question is similar to Kate’s. My girlfriend and I will be heading to the DR this coming January for my friends wedding in Punta Cana (Dreams Resort). I’m not too much of a resort type of person and I would love to be able to see more of the island, eat real DR food, and meet people outside of the resort. I would greatly appreciate your input on the following.
1. I’ve read that the distance between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana is about 3 hours by car. What type of bus options are available and how would you recommend getting between those two places?
2. Would you recommend we fly into Punta Cana or Santo Domingo?
3. Any suggestions on things to do outside of the resorts in Punta Cana? Thanks for your time in advance!
