I love those mountains but you're right, somtimes breath of fresh air is in order. On the one hand, buying a season pass often negates the high prices--so long as you get in as many days on the slopes as possible--but the I-70 traffic and loads of tourists are great reasons to look elsewhere. These are a couple of great tips. If you simply can't get out that far, Loveland Ski Area is also a nice alternative. It's close to Denver but doesn't see as large of crowds as the major resorts and once you become familiar with the area, it can be a real gem for backcountry riding. Ahhhh!! I have skied many of the large ski areas, but always feel like a member of a herd. I first skied Monarch three years ago, enjoyed it and the Salida area so much that I moved there.
