Buenos Aires isn’t all boliches and one-offs come nightfall. Matador Nights co-editor and long-term BA expat Kate Sedgwick captures the beauty of quieter barrios under cover of darkness.
Joe Strummer Graffiti

1. Joe Strummer memorial graffiti in Floresta.

Arbol Ventanas

2. A tree against a building. Even the most ordinary things can be so beautiful here. Barrio Floresta.

Pasteleria

3. When you’re walking down the street, you will constantly be tempted (if you have a sweet tooth) to duck into a confiteria or pasteleria for something sweet. Most of the time, the cakes look better than they are. This is a very good pasteleria in Chacaritas.

Carteles

4. Paper posters over paper posters ad infinitum. Barrio Flores.

Subte LInea B

5. A typical view of the subway, this of Linea B, the red line.

Dogs on the Roof

6. These dogs were pretty upset with the sound of my friend’s motorcycle, but I couldn’t stop laughing. Photo taken outside the city.

Taxi in Velez Sarsfield

7. A taxi passes by in Velez Sarsfield.

Torre Hotel in Chacaritas

8. This hotel is really close to Cementerio de la Chacaritas and it always catches my eye when I get off the subway in this part of town. Part of the reason for this is probably the fact that the other buildings in the vicinity are much shorter two- and three-story structures.

Parilla on the River

9. This little parilla on the river is the first taste of bondiola I ever had. Taken on Rio de la Plata at this time last year.

Hal and Carey on Rivadavia

10. Trips co-editor Hal Amen with his wife arm in arm on Rivadavia in Flores.

Subway car apinted with flames

11. Graffiti makes this train car on Linea B a comet.

Christmas in Once

12. At Christmastime, people set off fireworks. These were some of my neighbors when I lived in Barrio Once.

    Beautiful photos!

Kate, I’m jealous that you get to call Buenos Aires home. I visited in late August last year, fell in love with the city my first day there and have been dreaming of going back since.

You’ve perfectly captured the beauty of city lights at night, Kate. I love these (and no, not just #10).

    Thanks you guys!

I take photos without a tripod on very slow shutter speeds and sometimes I’m lucky (meaning that I like the results). I like the element of chance in working like that. I know they’re grainy, but I’m going for a feeling more than I am a perfectly executed razor sharp image.

I like your photo style. I too gave up the mini-tripod for hand-held night shots (surprised how still I could hold the camera). It gives the shots a very vérité effect.

Your photos took me back to my trip to Argentina last year. Thanks.
